Giving Up Freedoms for Health Care

Excellent article this morning on Yahoo! (gasp!) about the freedoms we - as Americans - will lose if this Death and Tax bill passes. Link

Here's a quick summary of freedoms that go down the drain -

#1 - Freedom to choose what's in your plan
#2 - Freedom to be rewarded for healthy living, or pay your real costs
#3 - Freedom to choose high-deductible coverage
#4 - Freedom to keep your existing plan ***!!!!!****!!!!
#5 - Freedom to choose your doctors

This is serious people. It WILL affect you...badly.

Oh Thank Goodness!

The Death & Tax Bill (a.k.a. Health Care Reform) vote has been put off until the fall session.

i.e. - your urgent care facilities will NOT be located at your local DMV....yet.

WOOHOO!!

Here's a more substantial review -

SuperFriends Reunion

10 years ago I sat down in Relief Society next to this beautiful girl with fabulous curly hair. I wanted to get to know her. Lucky me - she turned out to be my visiting teacher. Not only that - she was really friendly and outgoing (most girls with naturally curly hair are just awesome regardless). After much talk, we thought our husbands should meet.

Lucky us - our husbands turned out to be home teaching companions.

And they connected like glue.

But graduation was around the corner, and sadly, the natural curly-haired girl and her sticky husband moved. Fortunately, it wasn't too far - just 2-towns over. The night we helped them move - we met the psycho-analyzing cousin who was engaged to the politic-crazed woman. We grew to love them both.

Several months later, along came the best friend and his marathon-running wife.

And it clicked...the SuperFriends group was formed!

We're still not exactly sure why they continue to hang out with us. I credit Greg mostly.

And we're definitely a weird bunch. For example, we already have a contingency/utopia plan in place should we all end up on a deserted island - complete with jobs for each child.

And we do believe someday all our husbands will start an amazing sucessful company together...or local university.

But we love our SuperFriends group!! Some of us have moved away, some of us have moved back. So on those rare weeks in summer and at Christmas when we're all in the same town, I love the moments we get together.

Zion's Subway

We did it!! We hiked the famous Subway in Zions National Park. Yay!!!

9 miles of sand, slippery rock, gigantic canyon walls, freezing cold water, and gorgeous, breath-taking views!

The pictures above and below show our descent into the Subway.

And then we started hitting water.
Everything got wet. Thank goodness for water-proof bags that protected our cameras, our warm clothes, our lunch....

This was my favorite - and hardest - part of the hike. See that perfectly round boulder stuck between the canyon walls? Here we had to repel ourselves down into the coldest water I've ever experienced and the water was over our heads. Then we had to swim through 3 caverns to reach where I'm now standing. It was so cold you had a hard time speaking and focusing until you were out of the water.
Finally, I'd like to thank Lands End. These shoes were on sale 3 weeks before we left and arrived just in time. They held up against everything and were oh-so-comfy.

Hiking the Subway has to be in the top 10 "greatest experiences" list of my life. It was amazing. And part of what made it so great was hiking with Greg's brothers and sisters (and spouses). So much fun! And our fearless leader - Dave!! We would not have made it through without him.

We are already planning a second trip next summer. This is destined to become an annual McKinnon tradition.

Happy Fourth of July!

Next to Halloween, the 4th of July is my favorite holiday!

So many fun things to do, a chance to be grateful for the freedoms we enjoy, friends and family to visit with, great food, excited kids....and I even find nostalgic moments in the smell of fireworks.
