The "Look"

It never fails.

Every time I leave the house with my 3 kids in tow (which is...every time I leave the house), I run into side glances, second takes, whispered comments "she has her hands full!" or looks of pure disdain.

Here's a near-perfect example of "The Look" -

Not only is the woman doing a double-take, but the people in the background are looking at us as well.

Do I look like I hate my life?

Do I look like a stressed, out-of-control mother?

Sure I'm a woman with a bad haircut and 15 pounds overweight - but is that really the problem here?

Apparently having more than 1 child in this area is a big deal because people look like they've never seen anything like that ANYWHERE in the world.

But I love my babies.

Sure I HATE the potty training.

But I love being a mom.

What would these people think if they knew I'm contemplating a 4th?

I bet the looks are looks of amazement, not judgment, they're thinking "How does a woman that young and beautiful handle all of those kids with such grace"? They look mad, because their just jealous!

You're thinking of a 4th?! You go girl. I have my hands full with 2. I guess that's one benefit of living in Utah; EVERYONE has kids. The only looks I get are "why haven't you had another one yet?" or "gosh, your 2 kids are spaced a little far."

I agree with Jess. They are admiring your bravery for stepping out in the streets of New York with kids.

All good comments so far that I totally agree with but I want 4 kids to so all power to ya if you want another. I get the other kind of stares like you still haven't had any kids yet and you've been married how long? I just laugh. Your kids are dang cute and can't wait to hear if there is a 4th!

I'll be laughing all day about Greg's comment. Oh, your family is so GOOD for this crazy area. Sometimes we need reminders that just because every couple does not choose to have kid/s, it is an amazing experience, and what better gift can you give your children than siblings? Go family!

How funny -- that woman probably has grown kids of her own and just forgot what it was like. Who knows what's going on in people's heads! You need a t-shirt that says something like "I'm raising tomorrow's generation, what did you do today?"

it's because thy don't understand the joy we get from our kids. sure it's hard somedays, but the joy out weighs those days.

My sister's been in town with her little one that is Emma's age and we have been getting that "look" everywhere we've gone! It's hilarious to us that people think we're such a freak show with all the little kiddos.

I can totally relate. Try having a 3 1/2 yr old, 18 month old, and 3 month old. I get stares here in Utah! When we went to California, I felt like a freak. I got tons of stares and comments. But I totally adore my children, and they are worth the stares and the moments of frustration. A lady yesterday thought I was 21 with 3 little ones. Ha-ha! Good luck with #4. We want maybe 5, but it will be awhile. A little more space between this time! :)

Your not the only one that gets "THE LOOK." I get it all the time too. People just don't realize what they are missing. I love my kids and wouldn't trade them for anything even if I do get "THE LOOK."

It's so true! In Florida it was always wierd especially when they say I look so young! They all probably thought I was a teenage mom (well I guess I was pretty close to it when I started at 20!) but I was relieved to come back to Utah and feel more in a comfort zone. Well, now we're gonna be out of it again!

Also - you look absolutely fabulous and your negative comments about yourself are not true! And I am so amazed at how much you are out and travelling with your kids - I get so exhausted with just going around town!
